A proof that the best advice is often simple advice wrapped in a believable short story
Published by Thriftbooks.com User , 16 years ago
This book is advertised as being a bestseller in Japan and it is easy to understand why. Frequently, the best advice is the simplest advice, although it may have to be wrapped up in a believable short story. That is the case here; in most cases a simple story is used to present an important lesson in how to live your life. Many of the lessons have an Asian/Buddhist tone to the presentation, which is hardly surprising given the point of origin. Some of the stories are familiar, having appeared in other forms. For example, on pages 92-94, there is the story of the grieving mother that consults the wise Buddha, asking him to restore her baby boy to life. The Buddha consents, provided she could obtain a poppy seed from a house that has not known death. Despite the extent of her search, she was unable to find such a seed, but her search taught her that death is universal and therefore she would have to learn to live with it. Many significant figures of history appear in the tales, for example Otto von Bismark, Caffarelli, Socrates, Thalberg, Napoleon, and several persons significant in the history of Japan. Traits that are emphasized include honesty, humility, honor and respect for others, characteristics that seem far too rare in the modern world. This book certainly contains mechanisms that will help alleviate those shortages.

Good Life Guide for All Ages

Something You Forgot...Along the Way by Kentetsu Takamori is a book of Wisdom and Learning. It reminded me of the value of Aesop's Fables in my childhood. This little book of 65 very brief and entertaining stories, many of which are about real people, teaches 65 important life lessons of deep, pertinent spiritual and psychological insights and guidelines. These are entertaining enough to capture the interest of children and teens. The book is also for adults, giving sage advice of how to get along in life with more happiness, ease, and friendship. I highly recommend this book.
Simple stories for all ages: How to learn from life events

In his new book, Something You Forgot...Along the Way, Buddhist teacher Kentetsu Takamori relates 65 short stories that bring his philosophy, what we have is not ours forever, to life. He cautions us that nothing is permanent."Once this reality sinks in," Takamori says, "we cannot help treasuring each moment of our association."The stories focus on such basics as the importance of perseverance, the real meaning of honor, and how success is not gained by chance, but by the fruit of our efforts. The stories aim to give guidance and help the reader see deeper into life. The depth of his thought is belied by the simplicity of his prose. He writes with a clarity that is accessible to children but profound enough to stir adults. Just as the title suggests, as I was reading, I felt as if I was receiving one bouquet of flowers after another. I also felt that the book gave me increased confidence about going forward in my life in a positive way.
