I bought this book Solo online, as well as Atlantic Shift. Both are by this author. They are the same book just released under different names.

Couldn't Put Down

I've read all of Emily Barr's novels and this is up there with her debut Backpack. I had trouble putting it down to carry on with my day to day stuff. From the first paragraph I was hooked. If I didn't have to do anything, I'd be finished in a day. Once again Barr writes a complex, three dimensional lead character. Its very realistic to witness Evie's evolution into a better person. The pacing is perfect with the revealing of Evie's secret and the reader gets the chance to really get to know the characters. My only problem with the book was the stuff with Louise. That seemed to me, just a bit out there, a little over the top, but then again something like that was bound to happen. This is a very good read and I eagarly await Barr's next novel.

Captivating!

Emily Barr's "Solo" centered around Evie, a popular and pretty cellist in London who was on the verge of divorcing her husband Jack. Thinking that she did not have enough talent, Evie relied on her looks and clothes to keep the public and media interested in her to sustain her popularity. She never revealed herself completely to anyone including her best friend Kate, as she was betrayed in high school by her best friend, Louise. After leaving Jack, Evie moved in with Megan, who was completely taken by Evie and it was this time that she started receiving anonymous threatening letters. In addition, Evie had a secret that she kept since high school that had been burdening her and at the same time, she was terrified that it might be revealed which would demolish her career. I really enjoyed "Solo" as I felt that all the characters, particularly Evie, were extremely well-developed. The author took her time to give her characters depth rather than rushing through the whole book. Even though the characters had flaws, one can't help but root for them. In addition, the author's writing is clear and very conversational, which makes this book such a delight to read. This is my first Emily Barr's book and I highly recommend it to anyone who wants a relaxing read.

Page-turning anti-chick lit

This was my first novel by Emily Barr and I thoroughly enjoyed it. Her main character, Evie, was a fleshed-out, three-dimensional person who carries a lot of baggage over a traumatic incident in her teens and allows it to affect all her relationships from that point on. Over the course of the novel, she readily admits her character flaws, which I appreciated as the reader, and over time sorts her "stuff" out, but not all the way, which lended realism to the plot. My only complaint about the book was the secondary "mystery" plot which kind of fell flat. But overall I like Barr's style and will be looking up her other titles.
