Digger Burroughs, a Las Vegas insurance investigator, looks into the mysterious death of a doctor's wife. This description may be from another edition of this product.
The Digger series was a short-lived attempt by Warren Murphy (of Destroyer fame) to start a new book franchise. After just three novels, he switched publishers and re-started the series under the name Trace. Trace was essentially identical in every way, except for the character names. Digger is about an investigator who works for a life insurance company. He drinks vodka pretty much 24/7 and sleeps with every attractive woman he can get his hands on (which is quite a few). He's not terribly bright and his girl friend (a part time hooker) solves the case in pretty much every story. What makes the series is the humor and there is plenty of it. It takes a while for this book to get going but by the second half, the laughs start coming and it is a very entertaining read. This is not high art by any stretch of the imagination but if you're a fan of Warren Murphy or smart aleck humor then you should give it a try.
You'll dig Digger, he's as smooth as the best Vodka.

I don't know whether or not they had a wager or how the Digger series came about, but after I read Warren Murphy the first time, I searhed for all the titles he had written. The Digger series is a fun and interesting read. The characters are complex and real. Do yourself a favor, if it's out of print, find a copy somewhere and read Digger, he's Spenser without the attitude.
