A fine collection of five short stories

Small Circle of Beings shows the members of the Roper family in a house far out of town, at the end of a dust road which rises up into the mountains. Their son David is sick with jaundice, perhaps even dying, and his illness reveals to his mother the desperate bondage of family ties. The author's prose captures the emotional contradictions of family life and shows how a son must learn to pull away from his parents if he is to find his own way.
