Much better than Innappropriate Men

I was a little skeptical when it came to reading this book, because I have tried to get through Inappropriate Men several times. However, I really enjoyed this book! I liked the characters and at times I didn't want to put it down. If you like chick-lit, this is a great read!

Sleeping Over, the Next Sex and the City

This is one of the best books I have every read. I am not yet finished with it but can't wait, I figure I will done by morning tomorrow (since I only get to read on the train to and from work, an hour and a half each way). I hope they make your book into a movie or TV show just like Sex and the City. I could use a good chick TV show again, SATC was my favorite and I would watch Jess, Robin, Beth, Lilith, and Anne any day of the week and twice on Sundays.

Sleeping Over

Stacey Ballis certainly has a wonderful writing style. "Inapropriate Men" was such a fantastic and funny book that I could not WAIT for her next book. "Sleeping Over" has the same easy flow and is a perfect read after a stress filled day. Once again, I can't wait for the next book!!! Keep them coming Stacey!!

SLEEPING OVER with appropriate men

SLEEPING OVER is author Stacey Ballis' wonderful second book (the sophomore effort after INAPPROPRIATE MEN), which extends and confirms her gift as a keen observer and talented writer. Its structure and characterization are more ambitious than that found in Ballis' first book, and it asks more of its readers as the intertwined lives of its palette of characters are introduced and developed in sequences of short chapters, each focused on one of the core characters: An intimate circle of five Chicago women, long-term good friends who ground the stories that constitute the core of the novel. Their relationships--with each other and with their families, friends and lovers--are the gravity of the universe in which the novel's incidents occur. We are provided with a stylized device of dramatis personae as we meet the men who become, at least for a time, the counterparts to our female protagonists. For fans of INAPPROPRIATE MEN, it is again the imperfections of the characters which imbue them most with their utterly recognizable and sympathetic humanity. The dialogue sparkles with the ring of the real (and notwithstanding my personal, slight cavil that, as in TV's "Felicity", we encounter the apology "I'm so sorry" a bit too often). I wholeheartedly recommend SLEEPING OVER to singles and to couples, to women and to men. Pick it up and you won't put it down. I found Ms. Ballis' first book by accident while browsing at a store, the second one after lengthy anticipation. And now we will have to wait for the author's next book. Well done.

fine character driven tale

In Chicago it has been two years since the five young single women held a "circling up" to discuss men and other problems. However, now that Jess has returned home from two years overseas with the Peace Corps, the quintet agrees it is time. Jess wants to talk about her platonic relationship pediatrician Harrison who she lives with platonically but wants to make it more. Robin cherishes her friendship with her boss, restaurant owner Michael, but fears exploring what she really wants from him. Lilith enjoys the performing arts more than she does her businessman boyfriend Martin. Sisters Beth and Ann have opened up a clothing store, but the former has Jeff while the latter has Chris; two men coming in the way of their loving sibling camaraderie. Five friends struggling to spice up their relationships with the men in their respective lives, but will it mean the end of Circling Up. Fans of relationship dramas will appreciate this fine character driven tale that provides unique protagonists approaching similar male issues in radically different manners. The story line is more a series of vignettes as the focus switches from one woman to another. Though Stacey Ballis does a remarkable job of keeping the personalities of her Circling Up stars different yet consistent, readers will find the switching perspective difficult to keep track of anyway. Still sub-genre fans will appreciate this female Friends tale because the women seem real and their loneliness woes and fears feel genuine. Harriet Klausner
