STNG #29 Sins of Commission - A great first novel!

This being author Susan Wrights first Star Trek novel, I found her writing to be quite refreshing in the genre. Her writing style is very fluidic and she always sets a great pace for the novel which doesn't waver too greatly at any time. From this very first novel of hers I've found that her plot development is "dead on" and that she is capable of setting up enough intrigue and mystery in her novels that they're quite often very engaging, making for quick reads.The cover art for this title is pretty much the standard fare, except for a Ferengi Marauder being on the cover with the standard drawings of Riker and Worf.The premise:The Enterprise is on a mission to save the planet Lessenar from environmental collapse and suddenly her crew finds themselves entangled in a web of treachery and murder. When a member of a strange, emotion casting race is killed on board the ship, all evidence points to Worf and one of his oldest friends. The Enterprise is soon under an emotional onslaught from the surviving aliens who're projecting their anger and pain at the crew. Worf must now overcome this alien influence and find the true killer before the Enterprise, Lessenar and his honor are all lost.This novel is most certainly one of the best early STNG novels and an outstanding debut for this author who has so many more great novels to follow this one. I highly recommend this novel to any and all fans of the genre. {ssintrepid}

ST: TNG, Sins of Commission

Star Trek: The Next Generation, Sins of Commission by Susan Wright is an excellent tale told well, with Worf, Troi, Riker as the main three characters.Wright has worked in an excellent character development with weaving a tale of murder, intrigue, and mystery. The story is told and the Enterprise is the main background for this book. As the Enterprise orbits the planet Lessenar, the planet is threatened with an environmental collapse, but this is a secondary problem. The main thrust of the book falls on a murder, where the plot thickens and falls on Worf to solve.The crew of the Enterprise fall under an onslaught of extreme emotions projected by a telepath race of beings known as the Sli shortly after they were beamed over. Now, as the crew becomes crippled, it falls on Data's shoulders to solve the crime. This is a good mystery, filled with treachery, murder, and alien influence. The crew are a little out of character, but since they are under attack on a cerebral level, it is understandable. Beverly Crusher and Geordi LaForge are extremely affected and are quite entertaining.As the alien influence overcomes Worf, he has to find the true killer. All in all, this is a fascinating adventure worked with a flair for the characters and their development, woven with emotional intrigue, making this one of the best TNG adventures.You will enjoy this story as Worf's Klingon honor rests in the balance.

Exemplery characterization, but the plot isn't perfect

"Sins of Comission" is a novel by Susan Wright, who I think is one of the most two-faced trek writers out there. The quality of her work varies astronomically. This novel, wich is set somwhat after the episode 'Cost of Living', offers character exploration in it's best. The book puts the characters under telepathic influence, makin it possible for the deepest aspects of their psyche to surface. One of the affects is that the Enterprise crew isn't a one big happy family anymore, but is facing a situation where all the family members don't necessarily get along. This is done with great expertice and not compromising the believability of the characters one bit. They are not different in any way and every bit as real as they are in the TV series. Maybe even more real. The book does also a wonderfull job in promoting characters left aside in the series. Deanna and Worf are slightly more prominent characters than the rest, and ecpecially Deanna is portrayed extremely well. Worf also gets some extremely good scenes. This book shows the battle between open mindet and concervative views as portrayed by the intellectual Counselor Troi and the 'primal' Liutennant Worf, and does this with respect to both of thr characters. Although Troi and Worf are heavily portrayed, this book explores many of the main characters of TNG. And does that very well. The plot though, while intriquing, isn't as good as it might have been, but it holds well. A recomendet read.

Who did it?

The Enterprise is affected by an alien race called the Sli once they are beamed aboard from the damaged passenger/tourist ship, Prospector. Although the Enterprise is in orbit around the planet Lessanar to help with their ecological disaster, most of the story takes place within the confines of the Enterprise. One of the emotion casting Sli was killed in the explosion on the Prospector, and the captain and crew fear that the other Sli are angry at them and begin affecting everyone on board, except Data, with extreme emotions. The mystery surrounds on who caused the explosion that killed the one Sli. The Ferengi, Mon Hartog, who manages these Sli thinks one of the Enterprise crew did it. Can you trust a Ferengi. There are 4 suspects, one of which is Worf. Deanna tries to learn to communicate with the Sli, Worf leads an investigation, until he is confined to quarters, then Data finds the answer by beaming aboard the Prospector with Captain Walch. Pretty good Trek novel, but it starts out pretty slow and it has its slow moments in it. Worf is at his best though in being in a foul mood, helped by the Sli's effects. Worth reading.

Really cool one.

This was one of my favorite Next Gen books because it seemed so real. They meet this old sightseeing ship in space and all the people have to come on board the Enterprise, but they also bring the Sli who can read minds and affect the way people think, and I always love best those stories when the characters start doing things they normally wouldn't do. It's really weird, plus its got Ferengis - so you can't go wrong. :-
