When fifteen year old Kim Vesco moves from Chicago to Salem, MA, she finds that the local student body is divided into rival factions of witches and non-witches, with both sides bidding for her... This description may be from another edition of this product.
This graphic novel is a collection of six stories originally published in regular comic book format. Even so, they weave together nicely and form a solid, engrossing story. Kim is the new girl in school, but fitting in is the least of her worries when she discovers the not-so-secret fact that some witches also attend the school, and a few of those "wicks" think she's a witch herself. The story isn't riddled with "is she or isn't she," though, for it's obvious early on that something is different about Kim, and there is a danger lurking that affects not only her, but witches as a whole. The twists are clever and unexpected, and the mythology is well-developed, strengthening the overall plot. While having its dark moments, it is balanced with enough humor to keep it from becoming weighty. I also enjoyed the characters, but wish that some of them could have been fleshed out a little more because they eerily felt like characters I've seen before. Overall, it is a fun, absorbing read that kept me flipping the pages until there were no more pages to be flipped.
