"The Erotic Equivalent of Shogun" Continued

This direct sequel to Chrysanthemum, Rose, and the Samurai is the only one of the series currently out of print, which is a shame because it ties up some loose ends from the first book and sets the stage for the third book, Women of the Mountain, Warriors of the Town, besides being a pretty interesting read itself. Goemon, whose real name is Konosuke Matsudaira, has inherited his formerly estranged father's title of governor of Miyako and has used that position to set up his friends beside him in Miyako. For the "crimes" committed by the "quar-ple" in the first book, he has sentenced Jiro Miura, the giant half-English master-less samurai or ronin, to banishment from his hometown of Miura, which requires him to settle down in Miyako, and ordered Okiku, the female ninja, to be placed in his custody because "It is unseemly for a woman to be without a guardian." They marry, and he becomes a teacher. Rosamund, the shipwrecked Christian foreigner, is sentenced to incarceration, by Goemon himself who is now responsible for her conduct, and to "suitable physical chastisement whenever necessary" or as his adoring but extremely willful mistress puts it, "Only when I let you, lover." While "enjoying" an outing together the "quar-ple" is surprised by a violent attack, which they proceed to shred, followed by a commission from the Shogun himself. Goemon and Jiro are deputized as the Shogun's agents, given authority to appoint others as necessary, and ordered to investigate and silently "deal with" a plot to overthrow the shogunate because even news of a failed plot could encourage more attempts. With such an interesting beginning I thought for sure that this book would surpass the first one. Unfortunately it didn't quite. The problem is that once the plot and the plotters are fully revealed, which is fairly early, the book basically marks time until the satisfactorily wild climax. Along the way this book introduces the Lady Gojo-no-Satsuki who will feature prominently in the next book, bored wife of one of the plotters, who agrees to help our heroes in return for their helping her to escape her societal and class prison and to achieve her dream, which is to become a courtesan. If you enjoyed the first book, you will definitely want to read this one, even if you have to track it down from a used book seller, as I did, and one assumes that Blue Moon will be reprinting it eventually. Oh, as you'd expect, this book is chock full of sex, too. Note: Akahige Namban is also the author of an erotic series set in modern Japan: Tokyo Story and Yakuza Perfume.
