Shell Song - a long awaited look at mental illness
Published by Thriftbooks.com User , 22 years ago
I have just finished reading Shell Song by Ellen Schettling Whitehead. Mrs. Whitehead's ability to share her feelings about schizophrenia as it related to her and her family is truly a gift to society. I facilitate a support group for people who have had a loved one die from suicide. Many of these survivors lived with a loved one who suffered from schizophrenia. I will recommend Mrs. Whitehead's book to those survivors whose lives have also been touched by this misunderstood illness. The book catches your interest from the very beginning and doesn't stop until you are finished. Mental illness still carries a stigma, and I believe that books such as Shell Song will go a long way in helping us to understand and be emphathetic to those and their families who have suffered or are suffering from this disease. Whether you have had mental illness in your family or not, I would highly recommend this book, if only for the knowledge you will attain about schizophrenia and it's effects on those who are suffering from it and those who love them.
