Imre insists that Erzsebet, his daughter, whose life has been turning upside down, marry a man that she does not love. The marriage turns out to Erzsebet's advantage although she has some demands put on her with which she is very unhappy. Erzsebet struggles with life when her husband, Geza, a doctor, is drafted and sent to the Eastern front to work in the military hospital. With military tensions escalating Geza's mother flees from Romania to Hungary to be with her only child. The family faces fear when bombs come raining on their city. As their world begins to collapse the family flees to the West.
