As essential as the furniture is

There are a lot of books on Shaker furniture, but what about carpets and curtains and hotpads and tablecloths and bedspreads and clothing? That's where this book comes in handy. Well-researched book from the late 1970s with a sociological thrust that builds on the scholarship of the time (Andrews et al.). In other words, it is not inherently revisionist. A nice coffee table book on the same subject would be the perfect complement.
