Now, before you go thinking this is another one of those stories about a chosen hero who always knows what to do, let me stop you right there. Serenya hadn't the faintest idea who she was. Oh, everyone else seemed to know. Her parents had dreams for her. The Lightbearers had plans for her. Every respectable grown-up who crossed her path had another opinion about what the poor lass ought to become. Scholar. Missionary. Voicecrafter. Symbol. Hope. You'd think someone had asked Serenya what she wanted. No one did. Then she met the rest of us. I'm Bartholomew Saltfoot, by the way. Halfling. Bard. Professional traveler. Occasional businessman. Hero when absolutely necessary. If you believe Ebron Dain, I'm also a menace. Personally, I think that's unfair. Together we crossed dangerous roads, found ourselves in more trouble than any sensible folk should, met friends in unlikely places, and uncovered secrets that had been sleeping since the world was broken by the Riftstorm. Somewhere along the way, Serenya discovered that growing up isn't about becoming the person everyone else imagines. It's about finding the courage to become the person you're meant to be, even if that disappoints everyone who thought they had your future planned. Mind you, it wasn't easy. There were blades drawn, songs sung, hearts broken, impossible choices, and more than a few moments where I was reasonably certain we were all going to die. I was wrong...mostly. If you're looking for a tale of grand adventures, loyal friends, ancient mysteries, impossible hope, and one young woman searching for her own voice in a world determined to speak for her, then pull up a chair. I'll tell you about Serenya. It's a far better story than mine.
