Great book. Highly recommended for students of education and of psychology. Chapters range from academic treatises offering the most cutting-edge research (Bandura, Zimmerman, Schunk chapters) to practical and reader-friendly essays sure to be of interest to teachers and parents (Pajares, Caprara chapters). As other reviewers have noted, the Guide for Constructing Self-Efficacy Scales should be of great interest to researchers, particularly doctoral students interested in conducting studies of self-efficacy.

Exceptional

As a researcher in the area of academic motivation, and a psychologist who works with adolescents on a regular basis, I found this book very helpful. Chapters are lucid and grounded in the most current research. The editors have put together a volume that is helpful not only to clinicians and researchers, but for anyone interested in the beliefs of adolescents!

Working with youth - read this!

This is an outstanding new book that explores what is today the hottest concept in education, particularly in the area of motivation: self-efficacy. Part of the social cognitive theory of Albert Bandura, America's greatest living psychologist, self-efficacy refers to people's beliefs in their own capabilities. In this book, editors Frank Pajares and Tim Urdan bring together practically every prominent voice currently studying self-efficacy. The focus on adolescents is especially worthwhile, as none of the existing books on this topic has focused on this important age group. Bandura himself authors two chapters, one that places self-efficacy during adolescence in perspective and another that offers the Guide for Constructing Self-Efficacy Scales. Other chapters are penned by prominent researchers such as Barry Zimmerman, Dale Schunk, Anita Woolfolk (who writes on the self-efficacy beliefs of teachers), Robert Lent and Nancy Betz (whose focus is how self-efficacy beliefs play out when adolescents begin to select careers), and Ralf Schwarzer (on self-efficacy, adolescent risk-taking, and health). There are also chapters geared for those interested in how self-efficacy beliefs influence adolescents in areas such as special education, culture, the family, and sports. Perhaps the most practical chapter is provided by Pajares, who offers teachers and parents valuable insights about how self-efficacy beliefs can be nurtured and developed. This is a rewarding read and a much needed book.

These include three of the giants, Barry Zimmerman, Dale Schunk, and Robert Lent, as well as great researchers such as Nancy Betz, Mimi Bong, Gian Vittorio Caprara, Deb Feltz, Ralf Schwarzer, and Anita Woolfolk. Especially impressive, Albert Bandura, the Father of Social Cognitive Theory and of self-efficacy (as he is accurately described in the foreword), writes the opening chapter. Frank Pajares' closing chapter should be must reading for all parents and teachers of children and of adolescents. It's also worth mentioning that the Guide for Constructing Self-Efficacy Scales is included in this volume (exciting news, given that it has never before been published). All in all, a much welcomed book for everyone interested in the motivation and achievement of children and adolescents.
