Every problem this book has stems from the fact that it is far too old. Things to be aware of: 1) Chinese characters are 'hand written'. There were no real Chinese fonts when this book was written. The 'hand written' characters are hard on the eyes and not pleasing to look at. That said, they're legible and correct. 2) Pinyin was not yet the standardized, accepted romanization form when this book came out. So... no pinyin. That said, the romanization used in this book is fairly intuitive, and there's a guide to it at the beginning of the book. That being said, this book is extremely thorough, with very little space devoted to glossary/index/dictionary. This means it contains a TON of useful phrases. Plus, most of it's phrases are still very relevant. If you use your noggin, and eliminate all the phrases that refer to "Comrade", you'll be good to go!
Okay book

This book was very helpful. The pronounciation key at the front of the book was good and easy to understand. I think this is a good book for beginners. The only problem is that thay should put more conversational things in it.
