the greatest artist of the 20th century

Saul Steinberg is not generally considered to be the best artist in the 20th century, I realise that, but I think he definitely is. This book is proof once more. Do not be mislead by this man's sense of humor, or the sheer fun his work radiates. Yes, one can be a genius and funny at the same time! This book shows you why Steinberg is considered an Artist's artist by many. The book shows people wearing masks made of brown paper bags. The astonishing thing is that the masks are not traditional masks, they are re-inventions of the traditional portrait. Better then Picasso, and more then just cartoonesk. This is an amazing, beautiful book. It's time all the other Steinberg books got back in print, and, please, do it with just as much love as this one: it's a real gem!

Whimsical and recommended for art libraries

In the late 1950s and early 1960s photographer Morath and New Yorker artist Steinberg collaborated on photos of friends who wore paper bag faces for the event. Their photos appear here for the first time in a fine series of portraits of various subjects and settings. Whimsical and recommended for art libraries.
