Buy this book. End users and developers: buy this book.

Buy this book. End Users should definitely buy this book. Developers should buy this book. Consultants should buy this book. SharePoint is a complicated animal and defies easy description. To start, the product comes in multiple flavors (WSS/MOSS Standard, MOSS Enterprise, SSX and more!). SharePoint has been described as an "operating system for business applications." As a result, it's like a Swiss Army knife. It's full of interesting gadgets (web parts), but do we really need a "Fish scaler with hook disgorger & ruler?" And if we do, how do we use it? Do we measure the fish and then disgorge it? Do we scale/measure/disgorge? Never mind what the manual says, what is the real answer? The author leads the way. By focusing on Windows SharePoint Services (WSS), this book strips SharePoint down to its most important components, describes what they are how to use them. Even better, the book offers practical advice on the best way to use them, even in the face of contrary marketing-speak. The author "likes" SharePoint but is no fanboy. The author's voice is clearly authentic. He obviously understands the SharePoint well, has worked with the product for some time and is accustomed to working with non-technical end users trying to make the best of this tool in their daily routine. This background shows throughout the book. Developers will find a good chunk of the book to be, frankly, a little boring. However, as a developer myself, my interest really peaked near the end, particularly when the book discussed building reports using Microsoft Access. I'd had a notion that there was some "good" integration between Access and SharePoint. However, this book really opened my eyes. And, it saved me from wasting a ton of hours going down a rabbit hole with the wizard working against multiple lists. Read the book to see what I mean. That information alone is well worth the price of admission. I recommend the book to End Users, even experienced SharePoint End Users. The book's practical approach to problem solving, including the innovative "crime drama" scenario, will act as both a refresher as well provide food for thought on how to leverage the product in a wide variety of business scenarios. The book's one-hour-at-a-time format works very well. I was skeptical at first, but as I read chapter after chapter, I feel into a nice rhythm. It's inspired me to re-think and consider purchasing more of the "24 hours" series of books in other technical areas. Buy this book.

Great book to get you started!

I just wanted to drop a line and recommend this book to all people who want to quickly get a glimpse into SharePoint and in particular functionalities that are not covered anywhere else. No fluff in the content , lots of screenshots and a clear path to follow for those who want to learn this great platform. [...]

Nicely Done

Great format - wish I had thought of it :-) If you are new to SharePoint and find the numerous resources overwhelming - then this is the perfect book for you. You will learn several of the foundational elements of SharePoint administration, in 24 easy lessons.

Excellent self-paced learning tool!

Mike Walsh's "WSSFAQ" site is a well-known resource for SharePoint developers, and this book reflects the same style and attention to detail. It contains a wealth of knowledge for anyone who is approaching the SharePoint platform for the first time. The 24-hour format is great because it lets you get down to the nitty-gritty right away. I especially like the quizzes at the end of each chapter.

Great end-user resource for those new to SharePoint!

There aren't many resources out there on getting up to speed from an end-user perspective for on SharePoint. Mike has done a fine job in providing a 24hr self-paced tack in getting up to speed on using SharePoint.
