Please note when purchasing this book that Vol. 1 covers saints feast days January through June and vol. 2 covers saint feast days July through December. Aside from those differences the books are the same. Each volume have approx. 1 page of information about a given saint applying it the life of a child. Each day associates something about a given saint when they were young, sometimes drawing attention to things the saint did that would make young people admire the saint. There are also a few lines at the end of each saint day that offers good moral thinking for the day. This book uses many saints that are not commonly known which expands the scope of a young readers knowledge of their Catholic faith. Great Daily Reading about the Saints for Every Day

Saints for young readers tells about the life of a saint whose feast day it is that day. It is on the reading level of about a 3rd grader, though, with very few pictures in the book, it may take a 4th grader to be interested in it. These one to two page stories are enjoyable and about a variety of saints. As the back cover says, "In these books [IE. the two volumes which cover the year] you will meet saints from every nation and race, from centuries long past right down to recent times. You will come to know saintly kings and workers, queens and housemaids, popes and priests, nuns and religious brothers. They were doctors and farmers, soldiers and lawyers, mothers and fathers, teenagers and children. These great and humble men and women prayed and worked, and never gave up trusting in Jesus. You can be like them too." At the end of each story there is some way suggested that you can apply some principle of the saint's life into the daily lives of children. If you are looking for picture books on saints you may want to read my reviews of over 30 books on the saints.

Christian Heroes for Every Day

"Saints for Young Readers for Every Day" is an excellent two volume collection of short biographies of saints featuring at least one for each day of the year. Each entry contains some facts about the life as well as some details of the importance of his work as well as the timing and circumstances of his or her canonization. The entries are one to two pages in length. Many include an illustration of the saint. The whether the saints are among the very popular or the obscure, their stories are delightful. Although this collection is skillfully written for children, it is of interest to adults too. For anyone who is around children this set is an excellent resource. I have used it on many occasions to acquaint my own children with our Christian heroes. Whether you are seeking information about a child's patron saint, the saint whose feast is on a child's birthday or just a chance to introduce a child to a saint's story, you will find what you seek in these books. In addition to our usage in the home, my wife has used them in her Parish School of Religion classes."Saints for Young Readers" is a wonderful set which deserves a place on the shelf of every Catholic elementary school as well as any Catholic home in which children are being educated in the faith.

Short bios and wonderful ideas for living the virtues

The book has a saint for each day, with a biography that takes only a few minutes to read. After the biography, there is a point to reflect on regarding a virtue that the saint particularly excelled in or regarding a situation this saint encountered in his or her life. One of our daughters started reading this out loud to her younger brother and sister in the evening after the lights went out and I love this tradition. It introduces the childern to the saints of our faith. What I really like is that the reflecting points, from time to time, mention contemporary items like computers, videos, and stereos, so they are not staid. The suggestions are wonderful, instructing the reader on how to live a certain virtue and asking for the saint to help the reader with their daily struggle in this area or that area.I have seen many "Saint of the Day" books for kids and this is the best set of books (Vols.1-2). Great for First Communion gifts.
