Safety Preparations for Cruising begins with a discussion of gebneral preparations and proceeds to comprehensively cover safety material related to every facet of cruising. Topics include the structural integrity of the vessela nd its potential for breakdowns, basic skills, dangerous situations and more. Each chapter begins with a real-life experience introducing the topic covered and concludes with a valuable checklist summarizing the discussion and measuring strengths and weaknesses in ourselves and our vessels. This primer on safety is essential for anyone fitting out or preparing for offshore cruising.
This is a must have and must read and read again. Common sense by a hands-on seaman. Jeremy includes some nice british flegmatism and understatements and I particularly like his low pressure suggestions: in the end if you want to be safe your way that is fine as long as you don't put other people at risk. I have been on the water quite a bit (see my website www.maartenvanhasselt.com for more on that) and I find this a good refresher and I have had some moments where I added things to my "to do" list. Not 5 stars because it is a reference book and not a book to read in one go but it is not intended to. Looking forward to a book by Jeremy with more stories: that is a neat part of introducing the chapters. One can only hope that many people will buy and read and act on this book rather than wing it as so many do these days endangering themselves and others.
