I wrote ten rules for dating without getting hurt. This is the story of the fall I broke every single one of them.

My editor wants to make my column national, on one condition: I have to actually live out my own rules in public, week by week, and prove they work.

There's just one problem. His name is Gideon Marsh, and he's exactly the kind of man my rules were built to protect me from.

He fixes things at midnight and asks for nothing in return. He tells me the truth even when it costs him something. And somewhere between a broken sign and a boatyard on the brink of failing, I stop being able to tell which rule I'm breaking first.

By Thanksgiving, I'll have lied in print, driven through a storm I had no business driving through, and learned that the bravest thing you can do with a rulebook is admit you wrote it out of fear.
