A typical mid-80s US heavy metal band, the Los Angeles-based Rough Cutt followed in the footsteps of Ratt and Quiet Riot but lacked originality. Led by vocalist Paul Shortino (b. 14 May 1958, USA), they were proficient enough to gain support slots on American tours with Accept and Krokus, but generated little interest in the UK. Formed in 1981 by Shortino, Jake E. Lee (guitar), Dave Alford (drums), Joey Christofanilli (bass), and Claude Schnell (keyboards), the band was originally known as Magic. A change of name to Rough Cutt was followed by a slew of personnel changes, but Warner Brothers Records took a chance on them in 1985 and released the first of two average albums. The line-up on both albums featured Shortino, Amir Derakh (b. Amir Davidson, 20 June 1963, Schenectady, New York, USA; guitar), Chris Hager (guitar), Matt Thorr (bass), and Dave Alford (drums). In 1986 the band was dropped by the company and Shortino left to join Quiet Riot, leaving the rest of the band to form Jailhouse. Derakh went on to enjoy great success in the late 90s with sleaze rockers Orgy. Shortino put together a new line-up of Rough Cutt in the new millennium, known as Paul Shortino's The Cutt.
