Traditionally, the number thirteen has received a bad rap. It is seen as unlucky in many cultures, and even building architects exclude it when numbering floors (like anyone really believes there is a fourteenth floor immediately after the twelfth). Yet this ignores all the positive and necessary uses for thirteen - for example, how could we ever have a Baker's Dozen without it?
This is true with comic books, as well. Where issue twelve is often seen as a milestone, issue thirteen in a series is just as often a new beginning for the heroes and the story, setting a new creative direction. And comics represent nothing if not being creative!
