cute teen romance

This story is great for middle and high school students. It's a really sweet father/daughter story about a girl whose parents die, and who is paired up with her genetic father who didn't even know that she existed. Her genetic father turns out to be a very attractive and well off man who hates children and is completely self-centered. While it's a bit unrealistic how little she mourns her parents, it's fun seeing the development between the girl and her father. That the main character is a manipulative play girl provides the reader with a nontraditional perspective. Having her father encourage her and provide her with recommendations in her escapades is also a fun twist on this middle school romance story. Since this is the first volume, there was relatively little development, but I'm interested to see where the story goes from here.

Another great Youngran Lee title!

In keeping with many other titles by Youngran Lee, "Romance Papa" is a book that's full of humor and cute drawings, but it's also filled to the brim with intense backstory, a lot of sadness, and it's basically a title that runs the gamut of many emotions. The star of the story, little Myunghae, is a cute, feisty little girl--who goes through a lot and has a dark past, even though her cute and happy side is brought out by her Papa, Sangbum. And Sangbum is a cold, unfeeling man, who seems not to admit to himself that he's lonely--until he all of a sudden has a daughter in his life, and a whole new, kinder, brighter side to him is oepened up. It's all the more interesting that a daughter brings out such a lovely side to him, considering he starts out as a self-proclaimed mysoginist. The relationship between father and daughter also really helps them in their external relationships--particularly Myunghae, who in later volumes shows depth and maturity even with her rough and tumble, "I'll beat up my boyfriends" exterior. This series is definitely one where the pages fly by as you are turning them, and it's very clever, funny, and heartfelt. If you like funny stories, cute characters, great dialogue quips and a strong father/daughter story, "Romance Papa" is something I highly reccomend!

Page-turning Manhwa is over too fast!

There's something to be said for brilliant storytelling. The ability to lift a reader up, bring them down, make them laugh, and captivate their attention for the span of as many pages as Romance Papa does is no small feat. When I began reading Romance Papa, I wanted to discount it as another stock Manhwa - as something neither original nor clever. But I couldn't! From page 2, I was intrigued by the entire premise of the work. Youngran Lee's characters are full of deep, and oftentimes dark, emotions that draw the reader in with their conflicted and twisted sentiments. Each of the emotions the characters exhibit, though, is unabashedly human. Lee has an ability to instill a very real and very distinct personality into each character, and does so in a way to give them realms of depth and charisma that aren't often seen. Myunghae's father, Sangbum, is described as apathetic, cold, emotionless and even tells the reader that he hates women, and more importantly, children too. Somehow, though, his heart melts and we see a very tender and paternal side when he finally accepts Myunghae into his life. Myunghae, too, despite her vicious, vengeful and spiteful streak, has a softer side that barely shows in this volume, leaving the reader with only hints and guesses at the other facets of her personality. Romance Papa is absolutely refreshing. The great dynamic of the interactions between the characters stems from the clean and very emotion-filled art style. Lee uses a good mix of comical faces and small speech balloons (with plenty of under-their-breath remarks from the characters) to tell you what they're thinking and letting you into their heads. The reactions of Myunghae are absolutely priceless, and are the source of plenty of moments that will leave you laughing out loud as she blows her top, or shaking your head in disbelief as she punches out a would-be suitor (again, and again, and again...) But beyond all of the comedy and characterization lies a great story with plenty of deception, drama and pure entertainment that will leave you gasping as each layer is peeled back. Romance Papa went by too fast for me, and I know I'll be revisiting it again sometime soon as I wait for the next volumes to come out!
