My Choice

Rock River is a novel written by Bill Maynard. The plot in this book takes place in the country near a river during summer vacation. It is about five children-two girls, Ursula and Hannah, and three boys, Charlie, Luke, and Milo-who make a bet about who will catch the biggest fish. If the girls win, the boys have to eat night crawlers (i.e., worms), and if the boys win, the girls have to paint their hair green on the first day of school. When Milo goes fishing in a boat during a day when the river's water level is rising, his life becomes endangered because of his inability to swim. As a result, Luke bravely foes out to rescue him. About one week after the life-threatening incident, Luke goes fishing and catches a fish that wins the bet.I chose to read this book because of several attention-grabbing factors. First of all, the excerpt on the back cover, which is about going across a river by jumping from rock to rock, made me want to read this book. In addition, the title was very catchy because it hardly hinted anything about the content of the book. This made me want to find out the connection between the title of this book and the plot of the story. Furthermore, the cover was very interesting. It was beautifully illustrated because of the variety of vivid colors. The cover made me want to read this book because of what was going on in that picture-a girl and a boy were crossing a river by hopping from rock to rock.My favorite part of this book is when the children encounter a stranger catching fish in the river. Fearing that the fisherman might interfere with the bet, Luke devises a plan to persuade the angler to leave. He has the children fabricate information about the river, such as that it is polluted, and that it has snakes nearby. This plan succeeds, and the stranger leaves. I liked this section because it show how gullible some people are and how clever others can be. This incident proves that some children are smarter than adults.

Good book!

The guys and girls made a bet that whoever caught the smallest fish had to dye their hair green. They had lots to happen to them before their contest was over and sometimes it was scary. A book worth reading
