Robert Bruce [French]

Robert Bruce is a grand op ra in three acts by Gioachino Rossini, with a libretto by Gustave Va z and Alphonse Royer, first performed in Paris in 1846. The story centres on Robert Bruce, King of Scotland, who has taken refuge in a castle following his defeat at the hands of the English and is tormented by doubts about whether to abandon the struggle. His brother Edward is secretly in love with Mary, daughter of the English governor of Stirling Castle; she returns his feelings but is courted by the knight Arthur, who is loyal to the King of England. Whilst Robert, supported by his proud daughter Margaret and his loyal Douglas, plots his counter-attack, Edward sneaks into Stirling to meet Maria; there he is caught and challenged by Arthur, but the arrival of a messenger announcing the resumption of war throws everyone into turmoil and forces the Scottish king to come out into the open to lead his people into the final, decisive battle. In the third act, freedom is achieved on the field of Bannockburn: the Scottish army, inspired by Robert's heroism, routs the English troops. Arthur, mortally wounded, acknowledges the valour of his adversaries and, in a gesture of supreme nobility, blesses the union between Edward and Mary before breathing his last. Robert Bruce, acclaimed as king by the people and his troops, magnanimously pardons the vanquished and is reunited with his daughter Margaret. The opera concludes with a solemn chorus celebrating regained freedom, triumphant love and the birth of the Scottish nation under the leadership of its legendary sovereign.
