I first read this book about 16 years ago. It helped me pick out a good bike and proper gear. This book includes info on exercise physiology that will help you understand how your body responds to aerobic and anaerobic exercise as well as how to pick the right type and size bike for your needs and how to set it up so that get the most out of your riding. It helped make a new man out of me.
Worked for me

Not much has changed in cycling since 1987; sure, the equipment has changed, but not cycling itself. The bikes don't ride themselves.I was an avid cyclist 10 years ago, but hadn't been back on my bike in years and years. I decided to get fit and picked up this book at a used dealer. Results: Five pounds / month weight loss, consistently, across the past four months. I can ride century rides, am more confident on busy streets, and have improved my riding position to prevent knee damage.Look, the only way to get fit is to exercise. Think about how much a gym membership costs. Think about how much a Nautilus machine costs. Now consider the cost of this book ($4 for me) and a decent bike ($100 used, $350 new). You're not buying a book, you're buying a life change.

Let's assume you can ride a bike, but your knowledge stops there. If you are in this situation and are comtempleting riding a bike in order to increase your fitness level, then this is the book for you. This book is a comprehensive look at basic and intermediate level bike riding. Equipment, safety, nutrition and a comprehensive set of training schedules are included in this book. The message in the text is reinforced by the use of humerous illustrations. The only complaint I had about the book it that the beginning rides are 10 miles long, which felt like they were going to kill me! But!, as the author promised, those days rapidly fell behind me and I have quickly increased my fitness level, lost some weight and had fun, all because of this book. Buy it if you are thinking about riding a bike for you health!!
