Settled in 1630, Rensselaer's rich industrial heritage dates back to 1632, when a local gristmill became the first industrial site of the 13 colonies. Incorporated in 1815, the town was originally called Greenbush due to the numerous pine trees. East Albany was also part of the village and soon became an important center of railroad activity. The village continued to grow, and in 1897 became the City of Rensselaer, named after Kiliaen Van Rensselaer...
