Book Overview

Remington's supurb sense of movement allowed him to create realistic paintings of anything from galloping horses to running men. A book of art. This description may be from another edition of this product.

PROBABLY NOT FOR THE BEGINNING READER, BUT THEN AGAIN......

This book is probably not for the newcomer to the life of artist Frederic Remington, but then again if one only wishes to view a few paintings executed by this artist, it may just suffice. The book has an introduction which covers aspects of FR's life, however, that intro only constitutes 14 pages out of the book's total 127 pages. Contained within its covers are 75 full-color and 15 black and white illustrations and as the jacket blurb states it "will interest and delight lovers of the Old West and of art in general.". Yes, well, you can only ride that horse so far as most of the material is rather pedestrian 'Remington' for a reader with any familiarity at all. However, again, having numerous volumes in my collection, a biography as well as several art books, there are a few items one might not expect to see. Illustrations such as "The Thunder-Fighters would take their Bows and Arrows, Their Guns, Their Magic Drum", 1892, on page 34; and "The Ambushed Picket", 1886, on page 35; "He Rushed the Pony Right to the Barricade", c.1900, on page 58; and "The Last of His Race", 1892, on page 82, just to mention a few illustrations not generally found in a small portfolio of this size and especially lesser cost. Plus on page 50 a very nice representation is given of "The Blanket Signal", 1896, which could be considered suitable for framing. So after all the votes are in, this volume may serve both the seasoned reader and just the passing interest reader pretty much the same. I am glad to have it rest on the shelves among my other works on Remington, you just might be satisfied with it on your shelf too. Semper Fi.
