Reflections on Surah Al-Nisa': A Thematic Understanding

Surah Al-Nisā' begins with the statement of fact that the Lord and Creator of mankind and all that exists is none other than Allah. Therefore, it is only natural to seek His pleasure and avoid His anger, which is the essence of God-consciousness (taqwa).

The very first ayah corrects the prevalent and common perception of gender superiority, and condemns forms of nationalisms rooted in race, colour or ethnicity as the basis of superiority. The Qur'an declares that all human beings have common origins as children of Adam and Hawwa-all humans are equal in front of Allah. They can only excel over another in terms of Allah-consciousness.

It is worth noting that among the revealed Scriptures, the Qur'an alone has a chapter named after women (Surah Al-Nisā'). It elaborates on several social issues, with at least one-third of the surah dealing with aspects of family relationships, social ethics and law.

The surah also provides guidelines on dialogue and interactions with the People of the Book and other faiths; it discusses the objective of sending Allah's Final Messenger and mentions the common message of all earlier Prophets; it refers to those in authority - provides the criteria for their selection and defines the limits of their authority.
