A New York City policeman has killed a son of a violent gang leader, with a death sentence from the gang leader now placed on his head, his department superiors and the mayor too, order him to go west. Detective Sergeant John McBride is given a year's salary in advance and, amid a farewell hail of bullets, hops aboard a westbound train on a very rainy, bleak night. Though he is still carried on the New York City payroll, he now faces being a stranger abroad in a strange land.
