Sees children as authentic persons

--not lumps of clay to be molded by powerful and all knowing parents. Gives credence to childrens' thoughts, desires, and individuality and emphasizes treating them always with respect. A clear and well written book by a person who has experience and wisdom. This book is on my shelf beside "Your Competent Child" by Jesper Juuls and "Everyday Blessings" by Jon & Myla Kabat Zinn. I wish there were more books like this and fewer by those who rely on force and power in their dealings with children.

Short, sweet, loving and to-the-point

Barbara Hill Steinau speaks from 50 years of experience as a mother, teacher, preschool administrator and teacher of teachers. "Raising Peaceable Powerful Children" provides strategies for the difficulties that overwhelm parents--eating, dressing, competition, stereotypes, discipline, bribery, war toys, sexual abuse, separation anxiety, privacy, self-esteem, sibling rivalry, risk-taking, praise, egocentricity, fears, sharing, decision-making, power issues and behavioral problems--and suggests how parents and caregivers can devise their own techniqes. Countless vignettes from the author's life are shared, with good humor and an appreciation for the hard work that raisers of children are doing. A concise, friendly companion to caregivers. Well- and compactly-written, clear and supportive. Imagine what strong glad-to-be-with adults young people can become when approached with the understanding insights of Barbara Hill Steinau!
