An Art-Quilt Look for Traditional Patterns

This book contains clear instructions for traditional quilt designs. The quilts photographed are definitely art-quilt in their style, so the quilter who wants to get that look while using beloved old-fashioned patterns will find this book a treasure. There are also a number of suggestions for different approaches in a "Design Challenge" section for each quilt. Some quilts show different sets, and all show varied color and fabric combinations. This allows even beginning quilters to be adventurous without worrying too much about spoiling their fabric -- there are enough illustrations that you can visualize how your own choices will look. The directions are clear, with plenty of illustrations to show exactly how the pieces go together. Quick cutting techniques are used, and there are many helpful tips about pressing and stitching. The general instruction section is also very good, with much more information than most quilting books (there are even stretches for those marathon quilters). The charts apparently have some errors -- though I never follow patterns exactly enough to have found them -- but with that warning in mind, I think this would be a good candidate for your first or your only quilting book. The book itself is beautiful, and the historical notes are interesting. I also liked the fact that each quilt pattern includes notes warning the quilter about which parts may be difficult.

A Treasure for Every Quilter

"Quilts from the Quiltmaker's Gift" is undoubtably the most beautiful quilting book I have seen yet. Based on the recently published children's story, "The Quiltmaker's Gift", which is also a treasure, this book includes patterns and directions for making 20 traditional quilts. What impressed me the most when I first picked up this book was the gorgeous look and feel of the pages. Upon closer inspection, I have found the directions for each quilt to be very clear and easy to follow. Directions and fabric requirements are given for a lap, double and queen size quilt for each pattern. I especially like the way the authors have shown each quilt in at least 2 different color schemes and sometimes a variation of the pattern. An added feature of this book is the interesting historical background information on each quilt block. Also helpful are the design challenges which give you tips and suggestions for fabric choices, block settings, borders, etc. I would highly recommend this book to any experienced or novice quilter.

Quilts From the Quiltmaker's Gift

Even if you haven't read "The Quiltmaker's Gift", this is a terrific book of quilt patterns. It is a "must have" for every quilter. At first glance, what sets this book apart from other quilting how-tos is how truly beautiful the book is to look at, the illustrations and overall appearance of the book is spectacular. As for the quilts shown in the book, all of the blocks and quilts are of traditional design, and while all are available in other books, the examples in this book are exceptional. The color schemes and layout designs are sure to inspire even the most experienced and artistic of quilters -- and isn't that one of the reasons we buy quilt books? The patterns are very well written, in that they are clear and quite detailed. There are excellent diagrams for each step of making the quilts, making the patterns easy to follow for both experienced and beginning quilters. Many of the different block patterns are also shown in alternate settings to show the variety of looks the same block can give you. As quilting books go, this one is first rate.

What a Find!

This beautiful and exceptional quilting book is an excellent companion book to The Quiltmaker's Gift. As a quilter, I am very impressed by the quality of the quilts in this book, the photos, the directions, and the many little extras that are in this lovely book. This is a "must have" for any quilter, and the 2 books together would make a lovely gift for a quilting grandparent and grandchild to share.

Quilts from the Quiltmaers Gift

This is a wonderful book. The quilts were well chosen so beginner and advanced quilters can make them. The pictures and diagrams are very good. I also liked the information on the different quilt makers. This is a book that I will use a lot. Being a beginner quilter, it explains everything well. Very satisfied with the book.
