This novel, Quest for Unity, continues the story of a group of families who entered the Unassigned Lands together and claimed land where they could be neighbors in northeast Norman. It is a source of worry for these friends that, even though they are far removed from the rest of the nation and the world in this territory, the wars of the world still continue to impact their little community of Norman.
Some of that group of friends are Methodists from the north church, some from the south church, and some are Baptists. In addition to the question of war, a question often on the minds of the Methodists of the group is, "With the Civil War having settled questions of slavery long ago, why are the North and South churches still separate?"
The young Cunningham family are living there in their small community next door to Rebecca's parents, and we share some details about day-to-day living in those early years of the1900s.
We share their fear for their young men as World War I looms, and many of the young men of Norman go off to war and come back gravely injured. We share the agony of the Cunningham and Bridges families when their sons return with serious injuries and take up the task of learning to live in this post-war world. Worst of all, Jeremy Cunningham has brought home with him a feeling of hatred of God for letting him lose a leg in this war that should never have happened. We are there as the whole family gives up going to church and is deeply in grief due to Jeremy's attitude. Experience with them, the joy they experience as the answer to their prayers comes in an unexpected way.
