In WWII, an American bomber pilot stationed in Italy meets a young widow and is smitten with her and her family. When he learns she dies assisting with the U.S. rescue effort after a German bomb raid, he suffers from survivor's guilt. Her son now an orphan, the lieutenant finds a way to adopt him and bring him to Las Vegas where he accepts a job on the Las Vegas Strip.Later, suffering long-term effects of mustard gas poisoning, the former pilot is hospitalized. When he tastes bread baked by a nun in the kitchen, he embarks on a plan to sell the loaves nationwide to save the small, financially-strapped hospital and dedicates the campaign to the spirit of his Italian lady friend.Years later his adopted son returns to the city that opened its arms to his father and to the hospital that cared for him.Promises Kept is loosely based on the true story of Sister Angelita Wasco, a Catholic nun noted for the Angel Bread she baked in the kitchen of the St. Rose de Lima hospital in Henderson, Nevada.
