Currently, the Brazilian educational system faces serious problems that have resulted in the weakening of schools and the loss of their significance for society. To transform this scenario, a philosophy of education based on freedom and the valuing of each individual is necessary, with a view to the development of a democratic society. This paper reports on the teaching experience at the Polytechnic Institute of the Federal University of Rio de Janeiro in Cabo Frio (IPUFRJ), focusing on physical education based on project methodology, with the aim of broadening the debate and reflection on the reinterpretation of educational processes in the public basic education system.
