Progress of science; its origin, course, promoters, and results

By J Villin Marmery

Book Overview

How did scientific thought become a public force? And who carried it forward when certainty was scarce? In Progress of science; its origin, course, promoters, and results, J. Villin Marmery offers a brisk, lucid history of science that follows the progress of scientific knowledge from early inquiry to the shaping of modern disciplines. Ideas reshaped the world overnight. With the confidence of nineteenth century science and the perspective of Victorian era scholarship, Marmery connects discovery to the habits that sustain it: observation, experiment, debate, and proof. The result is a popular science classic that reads as both narrative and argument, illuminating the origins of modern science and the long scientific method history that underpins it. It is also a reminder that science and civilization grow together, each testing and remaking the other. As a philosophy of science classic in a public domain classic edition, this work matters for more than its timeline of breakthroughs. It captures a period when science was becoming a defining cultural language, and it shows how institutions, instruments, and individual promoters helped turn private curiosity into shared knowledge. Republished by Alpha Editions in a careful modern edition, this volume preserves the spirit of the original while making it effortless to enjoy today - a heritage title prepared for readers and collectors alike. For science history students, it is a strong companion to formal study; for curious readers and classic-literature collectors, it is an unabridged complete text that rewards browsing, annotation, and rereading.
