Prevalence of Low Back Pain Among Skilled Construction Workers

Low back pain is a major problem in the workplace. Objective: To study the prevalence of low back pain among skilled workers at a construction company in a developing country. Materials and methods: A cross-sectional survey conducted from February to May 2015 involving 158 skilled workers at a construction company. Results: One hundred fifty-five men and three women were included. The mean age was 33.1 2.0 years, ranging from 20 to 58 years; the mean BMI was 22.8 2.8 kg/m . The prevalence of low back pain was 82.3%. No individual risk factors were identified in our study. Occupational risk factors included the occupational category of carpenters, prolonged standing, work schedules exceeding 40 hours per week, and manual handling of loads. Restriction of daily activities was observed in 49.2% of workers. The number of days lost to work was estimated at 380 days. Seven workers had changed jobs. Low back pain is common among skilled workers at CECO BTP. The significance of these socio-occupational consequences should prompt the implementation of preventive measures.
