Wow

I say Wow for several reasons. One is because i thought Penny JOrdan only wrote little Harlequin romance novels. I didn't realize she could write a real novel, in fact, several, as i discovered when i looked for more novels from her at my local library. But i was also stunned by the intensity of this novel. I didn't ralize she would deal with heavy issues like homosexuality, murder, rape and incest, and deal with them very compellingly, too. The part of hte book that described the backgrounds of the men she wanted to take revenge on, which dealt with these issues, was very well-written. But i, too, agree with the reader who said that a down side to the novel was the 'romance' between Pepper and Miles. I thought it happened much too quickly to be believed. I was stunned, first of all, when she asked him to make love to her.. only a few days afer they'd been alone together in Goa. I thought, she's had this intense fear of men because of the rape and now she's asking-almost BEGGING-Miles to make love to her?? No way! I was glad their love-making sessions went well, but even that seemed a little hard to believe. I also thought she fell in love with MIles much too soon, too. The writer shouold have at least had them have a few kissing scenes first, before having Pepper even consider the idea of making love with him to be appealing/not traumatic for her. But i definitely liked Miles. I was tempted to give this book 3 stars because of the unrealistic romantic relationship between these two characters, but the rest of the novel was so compelling, i decided to give it 4 stars. And gosh, Simon was a scary character ! THough i, too, felt his death should have been a little more dramatic, given all the pain and destruction he'd caused others (such as Pepper, of course; Tim, though it was accidental; Deborah; and his wife and son.) (SPOILERS) Also, about Deborah's death, I was so sorry the Earl ended up having a heart attack from the shock due to her death. He had been suspicious of Simon as he noticed him paying a lot of attention to Deborah and could tell something was bothering her. I was really hoping he would have found out why she killed herself and how Simon was involved with it and somehow been able to bring charges up on him. So, despite the fact the romance between Pepper and Miles was too unrealistic, i still liked this book for it's great suspense.

CHECKMATE!

Pepper Minesse (!) only has revenge on her mind when she sets out to destroy the men who did her wrong in the very compelling POWER PLAY. Author Penny Jordan paints an accurate portrait of the 80's woman whose money and power alleviate her to superwoman status in her quest to face inner demons. Her difficult path to fulfillment brings her to undiscovered territories that make for a fun and compulsive read. Some of her decisions may be hard to swallow (her feelings for Miles, for example) but POWER PLAY stays an entertaining yarn that is narratively enjoyable and worth every penny.-----Martin Boucher

She has done it again
