Throughout the 1980s and early '90s, our father spent a lot of time in Manhattan, rarely leaving home without his Minolta SRT-101. As he traveled around the island's neighborhoods, he focused on an often-overlooked detail: the city's walls. To him, they were silent witnesses to decades of history, layered thick with graffiti and flyers for activism, music, theater, and art. Growing up, we were captivated by the framed prints of these scenes that hung around our home, mesmerized by their gritty detail. Unfortunately, he never properly archived his film, and after his passing in 2013, we feared most of his work had been lost to time. But recently, a forgotten box was discovered during a basement cleaning, uncovering hundreds of negatives and prints that represent some of his most extraordinary photography.
