When the game ends, the real horror begins ; Warning: studies show that playing "Portus may result in a sudden, premature, and particularly violent death.; Can Asami play "Portus or will "Portus play her?; When the game "Portus is over, you really are dead.

Asami's best friend Chiharu has stopped coming to school and isn't answering her phone. It seems she's found something that's a little more addictive than the school art club. But when Chiharu mysteriously commits suicide, all Asami finds in her room is a strange video game called Portus. With the help of two of her teachers, Asami hopes to solve the mystery behind her friend's macabre death and the bizarre game itself. But is she prepared for the horrors of entering the twisted world of Portus, a game where, if you lose, there is no option to continue? A frightening vision of modern manga horror, Jun Abe's Portus might put you off video games for the rest of your life.

Wow--this was unexpectedly GREAT

I had no idea this would be good. I had read the Viz press release on Horror Titles and was looking forward to Uzumaki and Gyo--but picked this up on a business trip back to Boston and from the 1st chapter..this thing knocked me out! I actually had a nightmare after reading midway through. Highly realistic art. Very strong and emotional character development. The premise is not terribly new (very much in tradition of the Ring, Ju-on) but how it's executed for a book that is is absolutely phenomenal. I'm actually more excited now to read Gyo and Uzumaki but make no mistake..if you have money for only one...this one is a great great read. if you're into videogames-- PICK THIS UP...great concept that made me think back to RPG's like Breath of Fire or even the new Legend of Zelda and whethe something like this could happen. Very scary thought..but once u read how the curse gets put on the game..it will make you think. The ending..is okay. Not perfect hence why I only gave it 4 stars..but most horror leave off with a cheesy ending.
