Poking the Bear: to deliberately provoke or annoy someone who is easily angered or potentially dangerous. A significant factor related to the basic questions of life pertains to religion. I've been around churches all my life - from Vacation Bible School to the present and increasing number of funerals of my contemporaries. As a veteran of a variety of events and experiences related to religion, I decided to compile my recollections of them and arrive at an overall opinion related to their value. Recorded here are the events, observations and thoughts which have led to my beliefs regarding religion. I have attempted to frame the material in a humorous fashion, for I have long believed nothing is better than a good laugh. (Well, maybe ONE thing is better, but it's probably not appropriate to refer to it here ) Hopefully this text will offer some a laugh, others a smile or giggle. To the pious, I suppose a gritting of the teeth will have to suffice. It is not without a degree of concern that I share the information contained herein. I know I'm poking a humongous bear The power of religious thought, motivated and fueled by fear, is considerable; however, the danger posed by beliefs not supported by facts outweighs my concern for retribution from the more than once-born. Humanity faces a stiff price for avoiding truth and accepting dogma. I believe, if we - and more importantly, our children and their children -- are to survive, we must dedicate ourselves to that which is real and turn our backs upon that which is fantasy
