Good read about an interesting man and a great coach

This book, entitled "Pokey: The Good Fight", is an autobiography of Ernest "Pokey" Allen, a flamboyant, fun loving and hugely popular football coach from Montana. After starring at the University of Utah and briefly playing in the Canadian Football League, he went on to coach at various west coast universities and in the USFL before finally making a name for himself as head coach at Portland State University and then Boise State University before dying an untimely death from cancer in 1996.The original idea for the book was to chronicle not only Pokey's life but also his horrific battle with a deadly form of cancer and how he ultimately fought his way back to a point where the cancer was in remission. Sadly, the cancer returned just about the time the book was being completed, so instead of an upbeat ending there is an underlying sorrow, knowing that Pokey would finally lose his battle with the disease. The book does a good job of chronicling his life, and was obviously well researched. In fact the only knock I had on the book is that it was a little too full of facts and figures rather than offering a more revealing look at his character and what made him so interesting and appealing to fans. Still, this is a good book and for those of us who remember his days at PSU, it is a nostalgic, if ultimately sad, trip through the past.
