You do not want to know too much about this movie ahead of time, as the few places that are not predictable are all that it has. Here are all the standards: space rocks break ship, crash decisions, the survival of the ditziest. Throw in a few bug-bats, other obscure toothy critters, and stick your head in a hole. To make this movie unique and give it a name, you throw in "Pitch Black" darkness caused by (watch the movie and find out).
Not to sound snide, but it is clear that a lot of time and money went into the project. They had to pick exotic Australian locations for the planet scene (thank goodness it was not Mars again). Those Vin Diesel eyes were experimental metal contacts. The orrery was a cute touch amid the otherwise high-tech atmosphere. There is plenty of action, and even the obligatory waiting to be surprised did not drag on.
If this is a shoot-um-up movie and an "and then there were none" movie, it is done well. If it was supposed to be a sci-fi movie, which should have a moral to it, then it was lost in the shoot-'em-up scenes.
