If you are looking for a book that explains everything, but still offers exercises in abundance - well explained so that you can do them at home without a trainer - get this one. It even offers a few pages at the end of the book where you can, e.g., look up exercises especially to be utilized for back problems. The back-exercises helped me A LOT - as soon as after the second day I had improvement ... !!! Sometimes you might need some time to figure out how exactly you are supposed to perform an exercise, it might help if someone reads the explanations to you while you do them for the first few times. Without this help it might take a few tries before you have the routine down by heart, but if you have some patience it will work out nicely. Before I bought this book, I borrowed a number of Pilates books in our public library and then I chose this one to buy!
