PIECES of GLASS
For over a hundred years, Old Moonstone Cottage has been perched on the windswept cliffs of Cambria, California. It has watched the tides and kept its secrets. Richard makes his way to the isolated beach house with the kind of baggage you can't put down: the remains of a life he is done running from. There is a marriage in tatters, a love he has gone to great lengths not to put a name to, and the weariness of having to be someone other than yourself for everyone else's sake. He comes to the coast for some quiet.
The cottage, however, has other ideas.
Turn inside, and you will find the journals of long-vanished guests from every generation, all of them putting pen to paper about the same unexplainable things. They write of voices under the surf, of clocks that refuse to move past 4:44, of drowned men in the fog of the hallways. And of a girl at the water's edge who seems as much a part of the sea as the waves themselves. Mira is her name. Or was.
With storms rolling in over Moonstone Beach, Richard finds himself pulled into what lies below the cliffs. The locals call it the Hollow Tide, a place where grief and longing have been pooling for centuries. What first appears to be a haunting is in fact something more perilous. It is not here to ruin you; it is here to give you respite from the pain and the relentless march of time.
Then Jason comes up from the south, intent on making sense of the man he loves before he is gone. The two end up in a fight for survival and for the very definition of love. You see, the Hollow doesn't dangle death in front of you. It offers peace.
In Pieces of Glass we have a story of identity and loss wrapped in supernatural gothic horror, but at its heart, it is an examination of the courage it takes to go on living and loving when you know nothing is permanent. Some of our memories are a prison. Others set us free. And then some bide their time under the tide until we have no choice but to let them go.
