Stretching the visual narrative envelope

"Pictures That (Tick)" is an exquisite collection of sequential-image narratives (they're far too esoteric and unconventional to be saddled with a disparaging moniker like "comics"), incorporating a staggering range of McKean's multitude of visual mediums/styles. The various passages are illustrated in modes ranging from his well-known "Sandman" style, to the photographic manipulation and collage of his lesser known books of photography (arguably his greatest achievements), and even to stripped-down line drawings. Similarly, the narratives range from wordless to verbose. A fascinating experience for anyone interested in visual art or design, and/or highly unusual "comics," and a must have for any McKean fan.
