Book Overview

The Third Edition of the standard textbook and reference in the field of semiconductor devices

This classic book has set the standard for advanced study and reference in the semiconductor device field. Now completely updated and reorganized to reflect the tremendous advances in device concepts and performance, this Third Edition remains the most detailed and exhaustive single source of information on the most important semiconductor devices. It gives readers immediate access to detailed descriptions of the underlying physics and performance characteristics of all major bipolar, field-effect, microwave, photonic, and sensor devices.

Designed for graduate textbook adoptions and reference needs, this new edition includes:

A complete update of the latest developments New devices such as three-dimensional MOSFETs, MODFETs, resonant-tunneling diodes, semiconductor sensors, quantum-cascade lasers, single-electron transistors, real-space transfer devices, and more Materials completely reorganized Problem sets at the end of each chapter All figures reproduced at the highest quality

Physics of Semiconductor Devices, Third Edition offers engineers, research scientists, faculty, and students a practical basis for understanding the most important devices in use today and for evaluating future device performance and limitations.

A Solutions Manual is available from the editorial department.

Lots of math equations that you will never use

Sze doesn't give a simple explanation of anything. This book is for graduate students. The one I got is 1969. I thought I was going to receive a 1985. So make sure of which edition you are getting. Still, it has laser diodes, and other up to date stuff. No circuit diagrams. Not much in the way of practical application. A few abstract diagrams of the internal structure of some devices. Many graphs.

good quality

I could not make out the difference whether it is a new book or old one...it was of such good quality..

A chemists point of view

From the point of view of an advanced beginner in semiconductors I have to rate this book very highly. As a physical chemist I was primarily interested in part I "semiconductor physics" and part IV "negative resistance power devices." Therefore my review only pertains to those parts of the text. The coverage of these issues is wonderful. The author leads you along from fundamental concepts into a much more detailed understanding of semiconductors.

Great fundamentals book

This book had all of the information for a good foundation. It is easy to read.

still a bible

This book is not for undergrad. But if you want to be a guru, you still find this book very useful.

This is not a textbook!

I decided to write this review after reading the previous reviews to this book. Apparently, a couple of the reviewers think of this book as a text book, which it is not. Even though the first edition was published in 1968, and the second in 1981, this book is still a very useful reference to anyone who works in the field of semiconductor device physics. The author presupposes a good amount of knowledge, and does not try to lead the reader "by hand" through all the details in the derivation of the mathematical expressions. I recommend this book to all serious scholars at the senior level and beyond, -as a reference book-.
