Hints for Capturing Childhood

Photographing children is both a joy and a challenge. The innocence and vitality of children make them ideal subjects, but more often than not, children have too much energy to sit still in front of a camera for too long. Jonathan Hilton's book on photographing children can be of great assistance, especially for people who want original looking photos of quality, rather than simply a snapshot. His book offers tips on posing, lighting, taking formal photographs, candid, and special occasion photos. He also handles challenges such as costumes, the use of props, and best capturing children in their natural state as children. He also includes tips on intergenerational photography. To illustrate his points, Hilton includes the work of many other photographers, most of whom are professionals in England. Personal favorites include the work of Juliet Greene, Majken Kruse, Robin Dance, and the exquisite black and white photography of Belgian photographer Georges-Charles Vanryk Digital photographers will not find specific information about equipment as film photographers will, but the ideas of this book will give inspiration to any camera enthusiast.

A lot of practical information about photographing children

This not very big book (about 150 p) has a lot of practical information about photographing children - childreen moods and how to deal with them, photographing different generations, single child and groups of children, use of various light sources indoors and outdoors and so on. There is a lot of good photographs of children illustrating all chapters. This book is not for the total beginner in photography - it does not say much about how to photograph but it focuses more on what to pay attention when you photograph children.
