In this volume, Clark Moustakas clearly discusses the theoretical underpinnings of phenomenology, based on the work of Husserl and others, and takes the reader step-by-step through the process of conducting a phenomenological study. His concise guide provides numerous examples of successful phenomenological studies from a variety of fields including therapy, health care, victimology, psychology and gender studies. The book also includes form letters and other research tools to use in designing and conducting a study.
Moustakas is cited by many in phenomenological research because he lays it out in a way that is easy to replicate.

Beyond theory to practice

As I began my dissertation Moustakas book helped me traverse the often confusing waters of phenomenology. I had read bits and pieces about the topic, but he does a masterful job unpacking the philosophy, juxtaposing it to the practice, and pulling it all back together into a coherent picture. Further, he has several good chapters on the practice which one could use to do a P study (I am no longer moving in that direction but it will certainly inform my methods section). So, I write as one who has had the lived experience of reading Moustakas' book and my phenomenology will never be the same ; )
