The beautiful summer evening of August 9, 1865 just at sunset in Lake Huron off Alpena, Michigan, was a tragic time & place when the Propeller Pewabic sank with a loss of more than one hundred twenty-five lives. Down bound from the Soo, the Pewabic collided with its sister propeller, the Meteor upbound from Detroit. The encounter between the two vessels has gone down in the annals as the seventh worse catastrophe with loss of lives in Great Lakes shipping disasters. The reason for the collision on a clear early evening & in open view of each other has never fully been explained. As with the Griffith, this novel is about how a number of people came to be aboard the Pewabic in its final moments of despair.
