Passion Repose Disquiet

Passion Repose Disquiet by Pulastye is a collection of poems written over nine years. "Written" is a misnomer here, as it reduces the birth of a poem to the act of writing it on paper, which it is not. Writing is a deliberate action, whereas the birth of a poem is a spontaneous burst of feeling, born of a higher level of emotional revelation that anyone, anything, anywhere can trigger. To a degree we all are capable of these emotional revelations; without them, we would not feel joy or sadness.

However, these intense moments often take us over completely, suppressing our power of active observation. When our power of observation is restored, these moments have already passed into memory. Memory is an after-effect, not the real thing. It is a consequence, not the cause, and memories lose something every second they move away from the event.

In a poet's brain, part is hardened to be immune to emotional highs, while another part becomes extra sensitive to feeling them. The first part observes the second and records what caused the emotional high. The poet, then, tries to capture this in language that reproduces some of the same effects in the reader.

Most of the time, these revelations are private moments with no desire to share them with others. However, when the observing part of the brain sees the external world metamorphosing inside the hypersensitive part, it starts to feel isolated and scared. A book of poetry is the result of its attempt to seek validation from others (The Outside world) about how the hypersensitive part is behaving.

The level of hypersensitivity and emotional immunity in Pulastye's brain can only be understood by reading these poems, and that is for you, the readers, to do. But the world is certainly different inside Pulastye's head. There is a different glow there, in whose light the deepest, darkest, tender, and vicious parts of human nature shine like little gems. Not like gems displayed on the jeweler's shelf to be judged and assessed, but like stars in the night sky, to be admired and to make one wonder how essential darkness is so that things could glow. Nothing is without value here, not even sin or guilt. They are all part of a giant feeling machine created by nature on this planet, and the judgmental names given to them are as superfluous as any other structure erected by conceited human societies operating on the currency of safety in return for compliance.

The poems in this book are a form of innocent rebellion. Innocent because, in negating the existing order, they are not proposing a new one. Their rebellion is against order itself, not its type. They also do not know that they are rebelling. Hence, there is no order to the mode of consciousness (Passion, Repose, Disquiet) in sequencing the poems in the book; they come and go as they wish. So is the length or structure of the poem; they also don't follow any rules. But whatever and however they wish to say, they say with a truthfulness evoked by the mode of consciousness the poet is in. To read them again and again is an act of self-purification, for nothing brings out the best in us like the innocent truth.
